Evandro became pastor of Faithful Witness Baptist Church in his hometown when Pastor Roberto Silva (a national missionary) moved to a neighboring town to start a new church. After we got married Erica assisted Evandro more at the church while working mainly in Belém. Besides the responsibility of pastoring, Evandro was also involved in church construction & maintenance, evangelism, youth, Bible studies, and discipleship. During this time Evandro continued his studies at the Bible Institute in Belém.
Berea Baptist Church in Belém
When Erica arrived in Belém in 2005 as a formal missionary, she began working at Berea Baptist Church, started by her parents, Rick & Gayle McLain. Her ministries included developing and teaching the youth group, teaching a neighborhood children's Bible club, leading a women's Bible study, discipleship, and assisting in the church music and programs. After our wedding, Evandro assisted at Berea through preaching and helping the youth group during the week.
Preaching & Evangelism
Evandro considers it a privilege to have been given the opportunity to preach in a variety of setting and locations. While in Maracanã he would preach evangelistic messages in the homes of several church members. This served the purpose of evangelizing different neighborhoods around town.
Bible Studies, Youth & Children's Ministries
Both Evandro and Erica have been involved in Bible studies, both for adolescents and adults, neighborhood Bible clubs, vacation Bible schools, and church youth groups.
Sunday School Training Seminars
Before Erica arrived in Brazil as a missionary, she noticed the weakening of Sunday schools in various churches in and around Belém. She began to develop a training program for those who were involved in Bible teaching or desired to teach. Once in Brazil she offered the training to local churches for free. The training included 8 hours of seminar developing the areas of preparing and teaching a lesson, the purpose of Christian education, class discipline, and styles of learning. At the end of the course, those involved receive a certificate. As time went on Erica was invited to churches in other cities and states.
Singles Ministry - Koinonia
Seeing the need to minister to single adults (over the age of 25), Erica with the help of several others, started Koinonia (Greek word meaning fellowship). We met several times a year for fellowship in the Word and with each other. Every year we had a 3-day retreat. This ministry has continued after our move to Paraná, thanks to the faithfulness of some of the group who see the importance of spiritual encouragement and friendship that Koinonia provides.
In recent years quite a few Christian books have been translated into Portuguese, however are not always financially accessible to our people. Our bookstore and "traveling book tables" served the purpose of bringing these books and Sunday school material to the local churches at prices they could afford.
